Overturning Roe V. Wade will Bring the Handmaids Tale to Life

Ruth Bader Ginsberg has not been resting for a full week yet and Republicans are already trying to fill her seat. Despite prominent voices in the party vehemently saying that they will NOT confirm a new Supreme Court Justice until the new President is elected. Within hours of her death, the speaker of the house tweeted that there will be a move to fill Ginsberg’s seat. But Why? What is the rush?

Personally, I think the party is moving to deliver on the promise to nullify Roe V. Wade. Roe v. Wade, was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. For some reason, the right to make critical decisions about your body without government interception seems asinine to some citizens.

If you have not seen the Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, here is a brief synopsis for you. A right-wing political that wants to ‘return the US to Christian values’ overthrows the US government, creating a dystopia and renaming the country, Gilead. What is left of the United States is a hand full of war refugees in Canada. Gilead's greatest offense and first method of atrocities are removing the right to work, own property, and have bank accounts from women. Ultimately, reproductive rights are taken away. As a response to the drastically low birth rate worldwide, the fertile are taken into camps where they are taught to be handmaids. The handmaids are forcibly designated to be inseminated through biblically supported rape by the wealthy ruling men of Gilead. Think military captains, politicians, and influential businessmen. When these children are born, they will be raised by the rapists and not their birth mother.

The connection between Roe V. Wade and the Handmaids is the stripping of women’s rights to reproduction. See, the Supreme will become majority conservative if the GOP manages to fill the open seat before the 2020 election. My assumption and prediction is that they want to remove the right to abortion.
